When it comes to workout items, power grips are among the most underrated. The benefits of having strong hands will be felt in numerous activities: regular exercise sessions, sports like martial arts, tennis and many more.
When working on your hand grip, you do not only improve the strength in your hand, as you may suspect but actually involve the whole lower arm. This is incredibly useful and can help you in various ways. Here are just a few benefits that you can get from hand strengtheners or power grips. You will soon realize that they are as important as many other types of training equipment.
Hand Strengthener Benefits
Stronger Forearm Muscles: Forearms muscles can be built up to an impressive size and look using hand grips. This is explained rather easily: when closing your fingers, the muscles acting are actually the flexors in your forearm, while the extensors are responsible for the opening. Using hand grippers on a regular basis will allow you to train these muscles, leading to increased strength, stamina and a desirable look.
As mentioned, strong forearms are crucial in a wide variety of sports. They may provide you that edge that you are consistently looking for in your performance. Not only that but your ability to perform regular weight training will be superior, with less stress being placed on your strong forearms.
Increased Hand Strength: Not a surprising benefit considering we are talking about a hand strengthener, yet a great one nonetheless. Hand strength, when it comes to fingers and wrists, is incredibly useful in sports like tennis, baseball or even golf. They will allow for more powerful swings and fewer chances of accidents as a result of sustained effort. Climbers, gymnasts, martial artists can also benefit massively from hand grip training.
Improved Grip Endurance: The habit of increasing your endurance on the muscles you are training definitely applies to the hand as well. Using power grips on a regular basis will allow your hands to withstand an increased amount of effort before becoming tired. This means that, after a while, you will be able to sustain tension of higher intensity for longer periods of time.
Again, this is incredibly useful for those who lift weights or practice sports on a regular basis. For example, you do not want to practice your tennis shots and realize that, while the rest of your body would allow you to keep going, your hands have become quickly tired, demanding breaks or even the end of your training.
Having great hand endurance will significantly boost your ability to train in other areas that are important to you.
Better Dexterity: Training your hands on a regular basis will also allow you to become more precise in your movement. It is for this reason that some of those requiring fine manual work use power grips to train on a regular basis. Musicians, visual artists, even doctors can benefit greatly from this habit.
Hand Strengthener Reviews
However, if your hand size is significantly larger, it may not fit the strengthener, and you’d end up feeling a slight discomfort. Regarding the levels, it would have been better if Gripmaster added adjustable levels to just one device. That way, you wouldn’t have to buy a new device 2-3 weeks later simply because your grip got stronger. Plus, if you already have your hand muscles worked (for example, a mountain climber), 9 lbs may be too little for you. In that case, you may want to purchase a different model with a stronger tension. The design change is also something of an inconvenience since the padding isn’t as comfortable as the previous model. I tried to interchange padding between the old one and the new, but they wouldn’t fit. However, if you get used to this slight discomfort, the Gripmaster hand exerciser may be a good way to relieve boredom and gradually improve your strength. Plus, it’s also small enough for you to carry it in your pocket.
The two balls are also a nice addition to the kit and the fact that they come at different densities make them easier for you to use according to your mood. They work pretty good as stress balls on a hard work day.
People with larger hands may find this gripper small for their hands, but it should still offer a fair grip nonetheless. We also noticed some noises coming from the spring, but it wasn't enough to inconvenience the hand workout in any way – you just hear it. If only they could make some slight improvements to the adjustment dial this product would be near perfect. But even with that small black mark, this is still one of the best hand grippers I've purchased.
The 60-80 lbs batch is another story; those are definitely made for professionals. We managed to squeeze the 60 and 70 lbs ones at one point, but the 80 lbs one is almost so impossible, it’s comical – even when using both hands! You would probably be able to drive a truck over it, and it still wouldn’t budge. However, we did find a trick at some point – and that is to rotate it. It has some weaker points which make the ring easier to bend – although, at that point, we couldn’t feel a difference between the 70 and the 80 lbs ones. There’s also the risk that if you apply too much pressure to the 80 lbs ring, it’ll crack and break. It’s literally like trying to bend stones.
Other than the fact that the 80 lbs ring was literally made for Iron Man, we couldn’t find any major problems with the other rings. This is a very unique and high quality alternative to traditional hand strengtheners that I can safely recommend to just about anyone.
The build of the strengthener is pretty decent. The hinges were made out of solid steel, making the product pretty durable. Even after a few weeks of using, the hinge did not break, and the grip remained strong. The only problem about this product is at the joint, where the plastic moves together with the hinge, causing some friction. The plastic pieces will rub together at some point and create some fine dust that may need cleaning, but it isn’t a problem that will affect the device’s movement; it’ll just be there.
Another thing that you need to be careful of is the fact that it can leave stains. For example, if you work at a desk and you decide to test the product for the first time, prepare to clean black rubber from everywhere. The friction will create tiny droppings of rubber that get all over the place. This only happens the first few times you use it, but still, it's annoying.
If you are a woman with a medium-sized hand (or even smaller), the grip should prove to be very comfortable for you. The only problem would be if you are a man or someone with large hands; in that case, the grip may be more difficult for you and you may not be able to exercise to the full extent. The silicone material may also rub off on your hands and leave some stains, but this won’t cause any problems to the performance of the product.
Overall, the product seems to be fairly good for its price. It might still be a good idea to make some improvements on the spring since it is prone to breaking at some point. However, taking the cost and its effectiveness into account, the Kootek hand grip strengthener is a relatively good buy that can be used with ease by men, women and children alike.
