Medicine balls have been used to improve strength for many years now (since ancient times, in fact) and it’s easy to see why they are still popular. Simplicity, versatility, and effectiveness are just as important now as they were in the past.
Typical medicine balls are nothing more than weighted spheres generally filled with sand for the purpose of involving your muscles more during exercise. The sizes and weights vary according to user preference; sizes generally range from 33 cm up to 90 cm in diameter, with weights generally going from 1 up to 11 kg. They can be used for a wide variety of exercises that will involve almost every part of the body.
Medicine balls with handles, on the other hand, are becoming more and more popular with elite athletes as of late because of their increased versatility. They can not only be used to perform regular medicine ball exercises, but they can also replace kettlebells, which opens up a whole new set of one-handed movements.
Benefits of medicine balls compared to regular weight training
Traditional weight training has its undeniable merits, and its results are easy to notice. But there are a few limitations that medicine balls can help overcome. The biggest advantage these provide is the ability to train your explosive power. What this means is the ability to have your muscles perform intense actions for very short periods of time – this can be achieved by quickly accelerating while holding a weight. Medicine balls are ideal for the purpose, seeing how you can hold them while jumping, running or you can simply throw them safely, unlike regular weights that would damage floors. Explosive power is critical in order to develop various athletic abilities such as jumping or sprinting. Medicine balls also improve overall core strength, flexibility, and stamina.
On top of that, medicine balls have one of the best price/quality ratios you will find among any fitness equipment. The effects of using them for training should not be underestimated – many professionals use them for the benefits, not just for their price. Training with medicine balls is done even in the army.
Medicine balls also have impressive versatility when compared to most other fitness items. They can be used almost anywhere, they allow for a wide array of exercises to be performed, and they require a very short learning curve.
The Top 3 dual grip medicine balls
When we were first introduced to the product, we were content with its overall quality. Its construction is excellent, and it looks durable. This is not a product that will fall apart after you have used it during strenuous workouts. At the same time, we were satisfied that the medicine ball didn’t have an unpleasant odor, which had happened when we worked with other products of this kind. This one is completely odor-free, which is an excellent feature that further testifies to its quality.
We also noted that its sturdy construction prevents it from bouncing off hard surfaces. Thumbs up Aeromat! Its primary function is to be gripped, and the product works ideally in this respect.
Since the tool has two handles, you can simply grasp them, and you needn’t worry about dropping the ball while performing lunges, throws, rotations, etcetera. But the dual grip does more than that. It enables one to enjoy a fantastic, compelling core training. In the meantime, we would like to indicate that the product is also extremely versatile, which makes it excellent for strength, abdominal, and rotational movement training.
All things considered, we were more than pleased with this product. It’s well-made, durable, and the attention to detailing in its construction is remarkable. At the same time, it’s a versatile, practical tool that will enhance your physical condition and well-being. If you’re looking for a medicine ball with handles, this is an excellent pick.
However, we noted another aspect, which we weren’t as pleased about. As you already suspect, we’re talking about the odor. Many medicine balls have a problem with a disagreeable odor, which is similar to tire smell. The smell was strong; even though after a couple of days it wasn’t as strident, it still didn’t come off completely. That is really inconvenient. Like every other time, whenever we craft a review, we assess other customer reviews about the product. We did the same in this case, and we noticed that many clients complained about the disagreeable odor.
Moving on... the textured surface of the material prevents the ball from slipping, and the handles are particularly comfortable. Nonetheless, although most customers appreciated the size of the handles, female users indicated that they might be quite large, which makes exercising rather uncomfortable.
We tested this medicine ball with the following exercises: push-ups, squats, lunges, locomotor drills, cross-body patterns, trunk rotations, presses, drills, as well as lower-body dynamics. What did we conclude? This medicine ball ensures endless versatility when it comes to exercising, allowing you to engage in all kinds of routines, of various difficulty levels, not to mention that it is very easy to integrate this tool into your routine.
All in all, we believe that the Milliard Double-Grip Medicine Ball is a great purchase if you're looking to add medicine ball or kettlebell movements to your workouts. This can add all kinds of variety to your routine and help build your core, balance, and stability muscles.
However, a useful feature is the construction of the handles. Even though medicine balls that come with handles aren’t an innovation, the thing with this particular medicine ball is that the handles are extremely large. Hence, you won’t have to worry that you might feel uncomfortable when using this tool, in the case in which your hands are large. In the meantime, the way in which the handles are carved hinders awkward, uncomfortable handling during exercising.
Apart from performing typical medicine ball movements, we also performed kickbacks, presses, swings, rows, and many others. It produces minimal bounce and has a tough outer layer, so if you happen to drop the ball during exercising you won’t have to worry about damage.
On the other hand, some customers reported having received a partially deflated product. For some it eventually inflated, for others not so much. Hopefully the manufacturer is aware of these complaints and enhances the product in this respect.
All in all, this product is a recommendable purchase with more pros than cons.
How do I choose a good medicine ball?
Medicine balls are simple in nature so you would think there are not many aspects where a difference could be made between brands and models. After all, they are just spheres filled with sand. But, the truth is that there are several aspects that you should not overlook when picking a medicine ball that fits your needs.
First of all, you should focus on the obvious aspects: size and weight. We advise you to make a few tests, if you have the opportunity, in order to see what would work best for you. You need something that is not way too heavy for your physical condition. What you want is to be challenged; the weight should be enough for you to see improvement after using it regularly but it is important that you can still keep proper form throughout your exercises.
Good medicine balls should also be made with high-quality materials that are very durable – you will definitely drop them on a regular basis, whether you desire it or by accident. It is inevitable considering that many of the basic explosive exercises include weight throwing. Besides the material, stitches should also be durable: it is not rare that the weak point of a ball can be found in the stitching.
Another aspect worth considering is the grip. It is extremely important for the material and pattern used to provide great confidence when handling during exercises. These aspects are invaluable when it comes to reducing risks of accidents.
